CytoDiagnosis COVID-19 Instructions for providers   

Cytopathology services offers expert cytologic interpretation and consultation of gynecological, non-gynecological and fine needle aspiration (FNA) specimens with the ultimate goal of attaining the most accurate and complete diagnosis possible. We utilize the most advanced technologies available including light microscopy, immunocytochemistry, special stains and liquid base mono-layer pap smear preparation (SurePath).

We additionally offer FNA services to the VCU Medical Center hospitals and clinics and to patients referred from physicians for FNA to our Cytodiagnosis Center. Please click here to request a FNA

Turnaround Time

A preliminary interpretation of Fine Needle Aspirations is offered within 30 minutes. FNA final results are available within 3-7 days and are subject to any required ancillary studies.

Gynecological: 2-5 days; Nongynecological: 3-5 days; Fine Needle Aspiration: 3-7 days. 
Turnaround times on all final interpretations are subject to ancillary studies that may need to be performed.    

Tests Performed

  • Light microscopy utilizing routinely both Papanicolaou and Diff-Quik stains; special stains and immunocytochemistry when necessary
  • Conventional and liquid based pap smear preparations
  • Cell block preparation on body fluids and fine needle aspiration specimens when possible
  • Superficial Fine Needle Aspiration Service
  • Consultation service on all types of cytologic cases

Special Instructions

All Cytology specimens must be properly labeled with patient's full name, medical record number, source of material and must be accompanied by HIS specimen pick up sheet/label or manual requisition with all requested information provided. An order needs to be placed in the computer system for all specimens along with pertinent clinical history, differential diagnosis and other details. Patient's last name must be written in pencil on all glass slides submitted.
