Sanford-ASCP-2025Atlanta, GA - The American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) presented the 2025 ASCP Israel Davidsohn Award for Distinguished Service to Kim W. Sanford, MD, MASCP, a past president of ASCP and medical director of transfusion medicine at Virginia Commonwealth University. At VCU, Dr. Sanford is also professor of pathology, medical director of the Stony Point and Ambulatory Outpatient Pavillion Laboratories, and program director of the Pathology Residency Program. 
 

The Israel Davidsohn Award for Distinguished Service, presented during the ASCP 2025 Annual Meeting, held November 17-20, in Atlanta, Georgia, recognizes that rare individual capable of making a significant impact within ASCP through a variety of roles. Established in 1989, this award recognizes ASCP past president Israel Davidsohn, MD, FASCP, whose contributions touched every aspect of the Society. 

Dr. Sanford graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in medical laboratory sciences from VCU in 1991. After working in a variety of laboratories in the Department of Pathology at VCU for six years, she entered medical school. Later, she completed residency in anatomic and clinical pathology at VCU, and a fellowship in transfusion medicine at University of Virginia. 

In 2021, Dr. Sanford was elected president of ASCP. She has received numerous ASCP honors, including the Ward Burdick Award for Dedicated Service to Pathology, the H.P. Smith Award for Distinguished Pathology Educator, and the Mastership designation. Dr. Sanford has received many awards for outstanding teaching.
