Dr. Enrique Gerszten is Emeritus Professor in the Department of Pathology. Dr. Gerszten graduated from the schools of Economic Sciences and Medicine from the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina. He did his residency in Pathology in New York and Richmond. He started his academic career at the Medical College of Virginia in 1963. In 1999 he became the Vice-Chairman of Undergraduate Education Programs in the Department of Pathology.
Dr. Gerszten retired in 2009 but is continuing as a part-time faculty. During his long career that has now spanned more than 50 years on the Medical College of Virginia Campus; he has had the opportunity to teach well over 10,000 medical and dental students, residents and fellows, college and high school students about the field of pathology. Dr. Gerszten received multiple awards and honors for his teaching achievements.
His clinical service is in the Anatomic Division, Autopsy Service. His research is focusing in the field of Paleopathology, the study of diseases in the antiquity, mainly in South American Mummies. He has published extensively about his research.
