Dr. Smith joined the Pathology Department in 2014. He received a B.S. in Genetics and Biology from the University of Georgia as a Foundation Fellow in 2002, then completed the NIH-designated Medical Scientist Training Program at the University of Virginia (MS, 2006, PhD, 2008, and MD, 2008). After a postdoctoral fellowship at UVA, he completed his residency in Anatomic Pathology at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, and a fellowship in Genitourinary Pathology at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Los Angeles.
Dr. Smith has authored >140 peer-reviewed publications and >70 textbook chapters, including in the Diagnostic Pathology: Genitourinary series and as author of multiple sections in multiple editions of the WHO Classification series. He serves as Associate Editor for the International Journal of Surgical Pathology and on the editorial board of the American Journal of Clinical Pathology, Clinical Genitourinary Cancer, Diagnostic Pathology, Bladder Cancer, and Frontiers in Medicine. He has taught numerous courses at USCAP and Companion Societies, ASCP, and IAP meetings in the US, Canada, Europe, Asia, and Australia.
