Steven Christopher Smith, MD, PhD, is Associate Professor of Pathology and Director of GU and Soft Tissue Pathology, jointly appointed with the Department of Surgery in the Division of Urology.

Dr. Smith graduated from the Medical Scientist Training Program (MD/PhD Program) of the University of Virginia, in 2008, and after a postdoctoral fellowship, trained in Anatomic Pathology at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. He completed a subspecialty fellowship in Genitourinary Surgical Pathology at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, CA, under the directorship of Dr. Mahul Amin, before joining VCU.

Dr. Smith’s research interests center on the molecular pathology of Genitourinary and Soft Tissue neoplasia, with particular interest in approaches complimentary to histomorphology and immunohistochemistry in studies of the molecular basis of these diseases. His efforts have resulted in >120 peer reviewed publications and >60 textbook chapters. He is author of multiple chapters in multiple editions of the World Health Organization Classification of tumours.   

Dr. Smith reviews for a number of journals and serves on the editorial board of Clinical Genitourinary Cancer, Diagnostic Pathology, and Frontiers in Medicine (Pathology Section). He serves as Associate Editor for Genitourinary Pathology for the American Journal of Clinical Pathology and Associate Editor of the International Journal of Surgical Pathology. He has taught numerous courses at USCAP, USCAP Companion Societies, and ASCP annual meetings, and has lectured as visiting professor or invited speaker at numerous institutions in the US, Canada, Europe, Asia, and Australia.
