Jorge A. Almenara, PhD was appointed as Associate Affiliate Professor for the Department of Pathology in January of 2009. Since then, he has been the Director of Anatomic Pathology Research Services (APRS) and the Laboratory Manager of Anatomic Pathology.

Dr. Almenara received his MS in Clinical Hematology from the National University of Cordoba, Argentina. After that, he completed his residency as a Clinical Hematologist in the Children Hospital of Cordoba. Dr. Almenara earned his PhD from the National University of San Luis, School of Biochemistry in 2007. His field of research was synergistic induction of apoptosis by CDK inhibitors and HDAC inhibitors resulting in several publications while working in Dr Steven Grant’s laboratory, at Massey Cancer Center. Dr. Almenara also completed a post-doctoral fellowship in Dr. Alphonse Sirica’s laboratory, at the Department of Pathology/VCU.

Dr. Almenara has been very involved in the implementation of the LEAN principles in the Anatomic Pathology laboratory after completion of the On-Site LEAN training at the Department of Pathology at Henry Ford Health System in Detroit, MI.

As the Director of APRS, Dr. Almenara supports the research enterprise by contributing his expertise in tissue handling and embedding, including tissue microarrays, immunohistochemistry, and special stains.

Dr. Almenara is a member of the American Association for Cancer Research.
